TERCER DOMINGO DESPUÉS DE LA EPIFANÍA (calendario trianual, año C)

 

Members United Under the Head

1 Corinthians 12:12-31
"For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ."

Saint Barnabas Church is going through a challenging time. Without a regular presbyter, some may say we are weaker, that we are less of a church, or even that the Holy Spirit remains at the door of this place without entering. We have no presbyter, no Holy Communion every Sunday. What will we do? Where is the Holy Spirit? Some might think that without a pastor, there is no Holy Ghost among us. Others might think that as lay members, they contribute nothing to the Church, that their presence is necessary, and their absence would change nothing in the life of our beloved parish.

Some may say, “Since I am not a presbyter or deacon, I am not part of the body.” The music coordinator might say, “It doesn’t matter if I don’t come today; my role is not that important.” The treasurer might think, “Why bother managing the Church’s finances? Someone else can do it in my place.” The person preparing the Holy Table might feel, “My task is so small compared to the pastor’s that I am not even worthy to be considered a member of this church.”

You miss a presbyter, but I tell you: What would happen if we were all presbyters? If the entire body were a pastor, where would the music coordinator, the treasurer, or the one preparing the Church be? Saint Paul tells us in today’s epistle: “If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body.”

If a presbyter or deacon dares to say to a layperson, “I don’t need you; my work is more important than yours,” the Lord will rebuke them, saying: “For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).

Jesus came to proclaim the Good News to those who rcognize their faults and humble themselves. They have been exalted by the power of God. The Church is an anticipation of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of God is here, now, among you. Jesus is the head of the Church, and you are His body. He rose first, and you will rise on the last day. A body cannot live without a stomach, lungs, heart, or liver. Each of you who comes to this hospital of sinners, knowing that without Christ you are nothing and that you need a Savior, is a member of the whole body.

God has ordained Saint Barnabas Church, giving honor to those who repent of their sins, humble themselves, and serve with a contrite heart. God exalts those who help by lighting a candle, arranging chairs, printing readings, or simply attending Church and praying in communion with others. In this way, if even an insignificant member of our body suffers, we all suffer; and if one member rejoices, we all rejoice with them.

We have learned that the Lord loves all of you equally, that we are all important in the Church, and that we will always have our head, Christ, leading and guiding the body of Saint Barnabas. “And you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority” (Colossians 2:10). “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23). We are protected under the shadow of the Almighty’s wings. We will fear nothing.

What can you do now? How can you help the body as a faithful member? There are many spiritual gifts and ministries that God gives to His people. “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord.” Teaching, healing, speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues, the gift of unwavering faith, prayer, miracles, prophecy, service, or administration—these gifts are the living presence of the Holy Spirit among us.

When a teacher teaches in the Church or when a woman prays over someone in a disordered world, the Spirit is upon them, actively working, creating life, just as in Genesis 1, the Holy Spirit moved upon the waters in the midst of chaos. You, as members of the body, are God’s instrument to bring His Kingdom to earth. You are God’s light, shining His love before men so they may glorify your Father in Heaven.

Someone might ask, “What is my gift? I don’t know it.” Saint Paul tells you: “But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way” (1 Corinthians 12:31). Pray to God, asking for wisdom. Lord, I want to serve; do with me according to Your will. As the Virgin Mary said: “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long” (Psalm 25:4-5).

And I say to you: “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you” (Matthew 7:7). If the Lord cares for the birds of the air and what they shall eat, how much more will He grant the gifts His Church needs? Pray without ceasing, and you will find it. As there are many ministries and needs in the body, many are the laborers the Lord’s vineyard requires.

The Lord gave His life for you and rose from the dead so that you are no longer a slave to evil and the world, but free to serve Him and your neighbor. Every time you walk through that door, remember that in your weakness, He perfects and renews you. It is no longer your old man here but the new man acting and serving through the Holy Spirit. You are no longer a lost sinner but a brother in this Church, a living presence of the Holy Spirit, and a member of God’s beautiful family.

Oh Lord, use us as You will to expand Your Kingdom. Let all of us here collaborate in preaching the Good News to those who do not know it. We know that where two or three are gathered in Your name, You are there in the middle of them. Be present in each of us, show us where we can serve best, and make us instruments of Your Kingdom.

1 Corintios 12: 12-31

Además, el cuerpo no es un solo miembro, sino muchos.

La Iglesia de San Bernabé está pasando por un tiempo difícil. Sin presbítero regular, algunos podrán decir que estamos más débiles, que somos menos iglesia o, incluso, que el Espíritu Santo se queda en la puerta de este lugar sin entrar en ella. No tenemos presbítero, no tenemos Santa Comunión cada domingo. ¿Qué haremos? ¿Dónde está el Santo Espíritu? Algunos pueden pensar que como no hay pastor no hay Espíritu. Otros pueden pensar que como miembros laicos nada aportan a la Iglesia, que su presencia puede ser prescindible y que su ausencia nada cambiaría la vida de nuestra amada parroquia. Algunos dirán: como no soy presbítero o diácono, no soy del cuerpo. La encargada de la música podrá decir: no importa que no venga hoy, mi labor no es tan importante. El tesorero puede decir: ¿para qué esforzarme en gestionar las cuentas de la Iglesia? otro lo podrá hacer en mi lugar. La persona que prepara la Santa Mesa quizás piense: mi labor es tan pequeña comparada a la de pastor que ni soy digna de ser considerada miembro de esta iglesia. Echáis de menos un presbítero pero yo os digo: ¿qué pasaría si todos fuéramos presbíteros? Si todo el cuerpo fuera pastor, ¿dónde estaría el encargado de la música, el tesorero o el encargado de preparar la iglesia? Dice San Pablo en nuestra epístola de hoy: “Porque si todos fueran un solo miembro, ¿dónde estaría el cuerpo? ²⁰ Pero ahora son muchos los miembros, pero el cuerpo es uno solo” Si un presbítero o diácono se atreve a decirle a un laico: no te necesito, mi labor es más importante que la tuya. El Señor le reprehenderá, diciendo: “Porque todo el que se engrandece, será humillado; y el que se humille será engrandecido” (Lucas 14:11)

Jesús vino a proclamar la buena nueva a aquellos que creyéndose insignificantes han venido a ser engrandecidos por el poder de Dios. La Iglesia es una anticipación del reino de los cielos. El reino de Dios está aquí, ahora, entre vosotros. Jesús es la cabeza de la Iglesia y vosotros sois su cuerpo. Él resucitó primero y vosotros resucitaréis en el postrer día. Un cuerpo no puede vivir sin estómago, pulmones, corazón o hígado. Cada uno de vosotros que acude a este hospital de pecadores sabiendo que sin Cristo nada son, que necesitan un Salvador, sois un miembro del cuerpo entero. Dios ordenó la iglesia de Saint Barnabas, dando honor al que se arrepiente de sus pecados, se humilla y sirve con corazón arrepentido. Dios exalta al que ayuda encendiendo una vela, ordenando las sillas, imprimiendo las lecturas o simplemente acudiendo a la iglesia y orando en comunión con los demás. De esta manera, si un miembro aún insignificante de nuestro cuerpo sufre, todos sufrimos y si un miembro es feliz, todos nos regocijamos con él.

Hemos aprendido que el Señor os ama a todos por igual, que todos somos importantes en la iglesia y que siempre tendremos a nuestra cabeza, Cristo, liderando y dirigiendo al cuerpo de San Bernabé. “Vosotros estáis completos en él, que es la cabeza de todo principado y potestad” ( Colosenses 2:10-12). “El Señor es mi pastor, nada me faltará” (Salmo 23) Estamos protegidos bajo la sombra de las alas del Altísimo. Nada temeremos.

¿Qué puedes hacer ahora? ¿Cómo ayudar al cuerpo, siendo miembro fiel? Muchos son los dones espirituales y ministerios que Dios manda a su pueblo. “Hay diversidad de dones, pero el Espíritu es el mismo. Y hay diversidad de ministerios, pero el Señor es el mismo”. Enseñanza, sanidad, don de lenguas, interpretación de lenguas, el don de la fe inquebrantable, la oración, los milagros, la profecía, el servicio o la administración. Los dones son la presencia viva del Espíritu Santo en medio de nosotros. Cuando un maestro enseña en la iglesia o cuando una mujer ora sobre una persona en un mundo desordenado, el Espíritu está sobre ellos, operando activamente, creando vida, de la misma manera que en Génesis 1 el Espíritu Santo durante la creación se movía sobre las aguas en medio del caos. Vosotros, como miembros del cuerpo, sois el instrumento de Dios para traer su reino a la tierra. Sois la luz de Dios que alumbra su amor delante de los hombres para que glorifiquen a vuestro Padre que está en los cielos.

Puede que alguien diga: ¿cuál es mi don? No lo conozco. San Pablo te dice: “procura el mejor don” (1 Cor 12:31). Ora a Dios, pidiéndole sabiduría. Señor, quiero servir, haz en mi según tu voluntad. Como la virgen María dijo: “He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra” (Lucas 1). “Señor, muéstrame tus caminos, enséñame tus sendas, instrúyeme en tu verdad; enséñame, porque tú eres el Dios que me salva, en ti pongo mi esperanza cada día.” (Salmo 25)

Yo te digo: “Pedid, y se os dará; buscad, y hallaréis; llamad, y se os abrirá “ (Mateo 7:7) Si el Señor se preocupa por lo que han de comer las aves del cielo, ¿cómo no te va a conceder el don que necesita su iglesia? Ora sin cesar y lo hallarás. Como múltiples son los ministerios y las necesidades del cuerpo, muchos son los obreros que necesita la viña del Señor.

El Señor dio su vida por ti y resucitó de entre los muertos, para que ya no seas esclavo del mal y del mundo, sino  para que le sirvas a Él y a tu prójimo. Cada vez que entres por esa puerta, recuerda que, siendo débil Él te perfecciona y renueva. Ya no eres tu antiguo yo el que está aquí, sino el nuevo hombre que actúa y sirve por medio del Espíritu Santo. Ya no eres un pecador perdido, sino un hermano de esta iglesia que es presencia viva del Espíritu Santo. Eres miembro de la hermosa familia de Dios.

Oh, Señor, utilízanos como mejor quieras para expandir tu Reino, haz que todos los que estamos aquí podamos colaborar en la predicación de la Buena Nueva a todos los que no la conocen. Sabemos que donde dos o tres estén congregados en tu nombre, allá estás tú, en medio de ellos, hazte presente en cada uno de nosotros, enséñanos donde podemos servir mejor y conviértenos en instrumentos de tu Reino.
