Pescando hombres para el Reino

Sermón correspondiente al 4º Domingo antes de Cuaresma, según el calendario de la Iglesia de Inglaterra, pronunciado ante la parroquia anglicana de San Bernabé (Torre del Mar-Vélez Málaga)

Then said I, “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”
Also I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then said I, “Here am I. Send me!”

The readings of today tell us the stories of two good men to whom the Lord gave an great task. On one hand, we have the prophet Isaiah, whose faithfulness and love for the Lord led him to challenge powerful monarchs of Judah such as King Hezekiah. On the other hand, we have the apostle Peter, a simple fisherman from Galilee, who would leave everything behind to follow his Lord and Master, Jesus.

Both knew that in their flesh there is nothing good and that they did not do what they should, but what they desired (Romans 7:18), that they were conceived in sin (Psalm 51:5) and that their sins disturb them(Psalm 32). Likewise, they knew that “there is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10) and that no man shall see God and live (Exodus 33:20). They knew the fate of those who approach the Lord with unclean lips, minds, or hearts. They were aware of the terrible deaths of the sons of Aaron for disobeying God in the tabernacle, and of Uzzah, the Levite, for touching the Ark of God. Only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8). Who shall dwell in the holy hill of God? “Only those who obey God
    and do as they should.
They speak the truth
 and don't spread gossip;
they treat others fairly
    and don't say cruel things.” (Psalm 15).

They knew all this. Therefore, Isaiah, taken to the throne of God in a wonderful vision, witnessing God Himself and being aware of his sin, cried out in despair: “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”

Therefore, Peter, amazed by the power of Jesus and ashamed of his smallness and sin, exclaimed: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Murmurs, evil thoughts, wicked desires, evil words, envy, jealousy, idolatry, spiritual laziness… All these sins separate you from God and condemn you to die before His majestic presence. God, who is pure holiness, does not tolerate filth. You know this. You know that without Jesus, you are nothing. Anyone whose heart is set on material things will not be able to live before the presence of their Creator.

But fear not, for I bring you good news today.
Despite unclean lips and dirty hands, the Lord loves you and does not want you or anyone to perish, but to come to His presence. He looks at you with the love of a father, a Creator who cares for you. He wants a close relationship with you. He is calling you to leave behind false gods and to trust in Him alone. The Lord loves you so much that He sent His beloved Son to die on the Cross and rise on the third day, granting you eternal life with Him—here and in the future. The Lord has prepared a dwelling place for you in the kingdom of heaven, where every tear shall be wiped away.

Jesus calls you: repent of your sins for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. It is here, among you. “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17). Turn away from the sin of envy against your brother, from the evil thoughts or words against your neighbor, from the selfishness that corrodes you, or from the greed that dries up your soul. Lament all your faults.

Isaiah and Peter recognized that they were unworthy to be in the presence of the Holy One of Israel. What was God's reaction?
“this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.”
“Fear not. From henceforth thou shalt catch men.”

Your sins are forgiven. God is faithful and just to forgive your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness. Do not fear, Jesus tells Peter. Do not fear, He tells you. The Lord has forgiven all your filth and made you a new man. God no longer sees in you the filth of the flesh, but the face of His Son in your heart.

Sin no longer reigns in you, but Christ now dwells in your heart through the Holy Spirit. Jesus wants you to reflect that love and forgiveness toward your neighbors. Do not hide the treasure God has given you, but share it with others.

Isaiah, cleansed from all sin, responded to the Lord: “send me, here I am.” Jesus commissions Peter: “From henceforth thou shalt catch men.” The Lord wants everyone to attain salvation, that none should perish. And He needs collaborators. God builds the Kingdom but wants you, His child, to participate in this beautiful task. You are a builder of the Kingdom of Heaven that Jesus brought to earth. The Lord God is the architect, and you are the worker. He has given you a task.

Christ is telling you: “Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee” (Luke 8:38). This is what it means to be a fisher of men. Tell your story with the Lord, how He rescued you and gave you new life in Christ. Be a bearer of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus.

People tend to pay more attention to personal conversion stories than to generic ones. But you shall proclaim the good news: “Jesus, who rose from the dead, healed me and will raise me up on the last day.” Everyone needs to come to Him. Everyone yearns to live forever. You are an essential instrument in God’s plan. The Lord delays the days of His return so that more people may come to Him.

Jesus Christ has entrusted you with the task of reflecting His love in you, sharing your story so others may draw near to Him. Do not worry about what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will guide you.

Let us pray to God: Lord, who forgave all our wickedness through the blood of Your beloved Son on the Cross, grant that we may serve You by sharing Your Gospel. Give us the courage, meekness, wisdom, and love necessary to proclaim how we have been transformed by Christ. Send us, Lord, to be fishers of men.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Amen (2 Corinthians 13:14).

 

EN ESPAÑOL

Las lecturas de hoy nos narran las historias de dos hombres piadosos a los que el Señor les dio una enorme tarea. Por un lado, tenemos al profeta Isaías cuya fidelidad y amor al Señor le llevó a desafiar a poderosos monarcas de Judá como el rey Ezequías. Por otro lado, tenemos al apóstol Pedro, sencillo pescador de Galilea, que dejaría todo para seguir a su Señor y maestro, Jesús.

Ambos sabían que en su carne no habita nada bueno y que no hacen lo que deben sino lo que quieren (Romanos 7:18), que en pecado fueron concebidos (Salmo 51:5) y que sus pecados los angustiaban (salmo 32). Asimismo, sabían que “no hay ni uno bueno, ni uno que busque a Dios” (Rom 3:10) y que ningún hombre podrá ver a Dios y vivir (Éxodo 33:20). Ellos conocían el destino de aquellos que se acercan al Señor con labios, mentes o corazones impuros. Sabían bien la terrible muerte de los hijos de Aarón por desobedecer a Dios en el tabernáculo y de Uza, el levita, al tocar el Arca de Dios. Solo los limpios de corazón verán a Dios (Mateo 5:8) ¿Quién morará el santo monte de Dios? “El que anda en integridad y hace justicia, Y habla verdad en su corazón” (Salmo 15)

Ellos conocían todo esto. Por eso, Isaías, llevado al trono de Dios en una maravillosa visión, presenciando al mismo Dios y siendo consciente de su pecado, gritó desesperado: “Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts”.

Por eso Pedro, maravillado ante el poder de Jesús y avergonzado de su pequeñez y pecado, exclamó: “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

Murmuraciones, malos pensamientos, malos deseos, palabras malvadas, envidias, celos, idolatrías, pereza espiritual…Todos estos pecados te apartan de Dios y te condenan a morir ante su majestuosa presencia. Dios que es pura santidad no tolera lo inmundo. Lo sabes. Sabes que sin Jesús nada eres. Todo el que tiene su corazón en las cosas materiales no podrá vivir ante la presencia de su creador.

Mas no temas porque yo hoy te anuncio una buena noticia.

A pesar de los labios inmundos y de las sucias manos, el Señor te ama y no quiere que ni tú ni nadie se pierda, sino que acudas a su presencia. Él te mira con amor de un padre creador que se preocupa por ti. Él quiere tener una relación cercana contigo. Él te está llamando a dejar atrás falsos dioses y solo confiar en Él. El Señor tanto te quiere que envió a su Hijo amado para que, muriendo en la Cruz y resucitando al tercer día, te conceda vida eterna, junto a Él. Aquí y en el futuro. El Señor tiene una morada preparada para ti en el reino de los cielos, donde toda lágrima será enjuagada.

Jesús te llama:  arrepiéntete de tus pecados porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado. Está aquí, en medio de vosotros. “Al corazón contrito y humillado no despreciarás tú, Oh Señor” (Salmo 51:17) Retráctate del pecado de envidia contra tu hermano, de los malos pensamientos o malas palabras contra tu vecino, del egoísmo que te corroe o de la avaricia que seca tu alma. Lamenta todas tus faltas.

Isaías y Pedro reconocieron que eran indignos de estar ante la presencia del Santo de Israel. ¿Cuál fue la reacción de Dios?

"He aquí que esto tocó tus labios, y es quitada tu culpa, y limpio tu pecado."

Tus pecados te son perdonados. Dios es fiel y justo para perdonar tus pecados y limpiarte de toda maldad. No temas, le dice Jesús a Pedro. No temas, te dice Jesús a ti. El Señor ha perdonado toda tu inmundicia y te ha hecho un nuevo hombre. Dios ya no ve en ti la inmundicia de la carne, sino el rostro de su Hijo en tu corazón.

Ya no reina el pecado en ti, sino que es Cristo quien habita en tu interior por medio del Espíritu Santo. Jesús quiere que reflejes ese amor y ese perdón para con tus vecinos. No escondas el tesoro que Dios te doy, sino compártelo con los demás.

Isaías, limpio de todo pecado, respondió al Señor: “envíame, aquí estoy”. Jesús encomienda a Pedro: " Desde ahora serás pescador de hombres” El Señor quiere que todo el mundo alcance la salvación, que nadie se pierda. Y necesita colaboradores. Dios construye el Reino pero quiere que tú, hijo suyo, participes en tal hermosa tarea. Eres un constructor del Reino de los cielos que Jesús trajo a la tierra. El Señor Dios es el arquitecto y tú el obrero. Él te encarga una tarea.

Cristo te está diciendo: “vuelve a tu casa, y cuenta cuán grandes cosas Dios ha hecho por ti” (Lucas 8:38). Todo esto significa ser pescador de hombres. Cuenta tu experiencia con el Señor, como Él te rescató y te ha dado una nueva vida en Cristo. Sé portador del Evangelio del Señor Jesús.

Las personas tienden a prestar más atención a las historias personales de conversión que a las historias genéricas. Mas tú proclamarás la buena nueva: “Jesús que se levantó de entre los muertos me sanó y me levantará a mi también en el día postrero”. Todos necesitan acudir a Él. Todos anhelan vivir para siempre. Tú eres un instrumento esencial para el plan de Dios. El Señor retrasa los días de su retorno para que más personas acudan a Él.

Jesucristo te ha encomendado la tarea de que seas reflejo de su amor en ti, compartiendo tu historia para que otros se acerquen a Él. No te preocupes sobre el qué has de decir, porque el Espíritu Santo te guiará.

Oremos a Dios: Señor, que perdonaste todas nuestras malicias por la sangre de tu Hijo amado en la Cruz, haz que podamos servirte compartiendo tu Evangelio, danos la valentía, la mansedumbre, la sabiduría y el amor suficientes para proclamar como hemos sido transformados por Cristo. Mándanos a nosotros, Señor, a ser pescadores de hombres.

 

Que la gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios, y la comunión del Espíritu Santo sean con todos ustedes. Amén (2 Cor 14:14)
