FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER The Heavenly Jerusalem Awaits You I, John, saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2). It’s common to think that when a person dies physically on earth, their soul goes to heaven forever, where they will sit on a cloud playing the harp for eternity, without a body. The Scriptures do not teach such a destiny. Therefore, no one will go to heaven, or at least to this kind of heaven. Today’s passages show us a different and very hopeful reality. It is often said that the book of Revelation is difficult to understand, complex, strange, and even dark. I don’t agree very much with these claims. Revelation, following the pattern of Jewish apocalyptic literature we see in the prophets Isaiah or Ezekiel, is written primarily to offer hope to a community suffering persecution or exile.
