DOMINGO DE LA TRINIDAD

TRINITY SUNDAY (Year C, Church of England Lectionary)

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1, NIV)

The Trinity is one of the most important teachings in the Christian faith and one of the hardest to understand. This year, we are remembering 1700 years since the Council of Nicaea. At Nicaea, the Church affirmed that Christ shares the same nature as the Father and is eternal with Him.

I won’t go into deep debates about Nicaea or try to explain the mystery of the Trinity today. We simply believe that God is one being in three distinct persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

So instead of explaining the details, I want to ask and answer a simple question:

What does the Trinity mean for your personal life?

Our Triune God is good, loving, and worthy of all praise. Today we will reflect on how this God saves you:

1. First, how the Father created you, and how sin corrupted that creation.
2. Second, how the Son came into the world to restore your relationship with the Father.
3. Third, how the Holy Spirit brings new life and assures you of your salvation.

You, like all people, have sinned and turned away from God. You’ve broken your relationship with Him. The natural human heart is sinful and deserves God's judgment.

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
“For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23)
“The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is filled with wrath... The Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.” (Nahum 1:2-3)

Just attending church sometimes won’t save you. “Without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

But it wasn’t always like this. God the Father created you from dust. He gave you life because He loves you.
“You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands.” (Psalm 8:5-6)

God loves you. You are the crown of His creation.

But because of sin, the Father is angry. Your sin hides God’s face. No one unclean can see God and live.
“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips... and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:5)

Still, God does not want to destroy you. He wants to save you.
“God our Savior... wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3-4)
He is patient and waiting for you to come back. He is ready to rejoice like the father of the prodigal son.

So, how can you be made right with your Father? Through the Son, Jesus Christ.

The Son of God was with the Father from the beginning. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He was not created—He is eternal.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

When the Father created the world, He did it through the Son.
“For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth... all things have been created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

This eternal Son “became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14)

“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” (Philippians 2:6-7)

Out of love and humility, Jesus became a man. He lived like you. He suffered and died on the cross, even though He was innocent—taking the punishment you deserved.

“The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Through His blood and resurrection, the Son reconciled you with the Father. The Father raised Him from the dead, and death no longer has power over those who trust in Him.

You receive this gift by faith—a faith that trusts your sins are truly forgiven. You believe that the Father sees not your guilt, but Christ’s righteousness.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

If the Father created you, the Son re-created you.

But how do you know this is true for you? How can you be sure your sins are forgiven?

This is the work of the Holy Spirit.

In Genesis, the Spirit moved over the chaos and brought life. At Pentecost, He came upon the apostles as flames of fire. Since then, the Spirit continues working in our broken world.

“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:16)

The Spirit, sent by the Son from the Father, tells your heart that Christ lives in you. He gives you the strength to respond to God’s call. He speaks the truth of the Father. He equips you to live the new life God planned for you.

“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” (John 16:8)

The Holy Spirit helps you love God and love others. He holds back your angry words and teaches you to be kind. You walk in the Spirit when you love your neighbor. He lives in you as in a holy temple—the same Spirit who gave life at the beginning of the world.

This is the beautiful mystery of the Trinity:

• The Father created you from dust.
• The Son redeemed you by His blood.
• The Spirit gives you life and power to live for God.

Your salvation comes from our loving Triune God. You cannot understand redemption fully without the Trinity.

“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14)

Justificados, pues, por la fe, tenemos paz para con Dios por medio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo (Romanos 5:1)

 

La Trinidad es uno de los dogmas más importantes y a la vez más complicados de aprehender por un cristiano. En estos días estamos conmemorando el 1700 aniversario de celebración del Concilio de Nicea. En Nicea se consagró la doctrina de que Cristo comparte naturaleza con el Padre y es Eterno con Él.

Yo no voy os voy a aburrir demasiado hoy con las discusiones cristológicas de Nicea ni con las definiciones de la Trinidad. Solo sabemos que Dios es uno en esencia en tres personas distintas. Solo hay un ser y tres personas.

Entonces, si no pretendo explicar los detalles de este sagrado misterio, quiero intentar responder a la siguiente pregunta:

¿Cómo te afecta el dogma Trinitario a tu vida personal?

Nuestro Dios Trino es maravilloso, bondadoso y digno de toda alabanza. Hoy vamos a hablar de como este Dios Trino nos salva:

-       En primer lugar, trataremos de cómo el Padre nos creó santos y de cómo, por el pecado de nuestros antepasados, nos hemos corrompido.

-       En segundo lugar, hablaré de cómo el Hijo siendo Eterno con el Padre, descendió a la tierra, se hizo hombre y te reconcilió con el Padre.

-       En tercer lugar, reflexionaré sobre cómo el Espíritu Santo sella tu salvación y te convierte en un nuevo hombre.

Tú como hombre pecador, esclavizado por los malos deseos y acciones, has roto cualquier vinculo con Dios. El hombre natural, pecador inevitablemente, solo merece su ira y castigo. Por cuanto todos pecaron, y están destituidos de la gloria de Dios (Romanos 3:23) El precio de tu pecado es la muerte (Romanos 6:23) Dios no tolera la maldad y destruirá toda injusticia que habita en el mundo. Dios es celoso y vengador, está lleno de indignación y no tendrá por inocente al culpable ( Nahúm 1:2-3) No pienses que asistir a la Iglesia de vez en cuando te salvará de la ira de Dios. Sin santidad nadie verá a Dios.

Sin embargo, esto no siempre fue así. Dios Padre te creó del polvo. Insufló aliento de vida en ti. Pudo no haberte creado, pero lo hizo por puro amor. El Señor te creó conforme a su imagen y semejanza. El Señor te ha hecho poco menor que los ángeles, te ha coronado de gloria y de honra, te hace dominar su creación (Salmo 8) El Señor te ama a ti, eres el rey de su creación.

Ahora bien, el Padre está enojado contigo por tu pecado. No hay paz entre tu Señor y ti. El pecado te esconde el rostro de Dios. Nadie impuro pudo nunca ver a Dios Padre porque morirá. ¡Ay de mí! que soy muerto; porque siendo hombre inmundo de labios, y habitando en medio de pueblo que tiene labios inmundos, han visto mis ojos al Rey, Jehová de los ejércitos (Isaías 5:6-7)

Aun así, Dios no quiere la muerte del impío, no quiere tu muerte. Quiere salvarte porque te ama. Él quiere que todos los hombres sean salvos (1 Timoteo 2:3-4) El es paciente contigo, no queriendo que ninguno perezca, sino que todos se arrepientan de ese estado que los aparta de su Padre. Él está deseando hacer fiesta porque el hijo pródigo ha vuelto a casa.

¿Qué hacer para reconciliarme con mi Padre, con tu Padre y Señor? Te mostraré a la segunda Persona de la Trinidad: al Hijo.

El Hijo de Dios estaba en los comienzos junto con el Padre. Él es el Alfa y el Omega, el Principio y el Fin. No es creado, sino que el Padre lo engendró antes de los abismos y de que fuesen las fuentes de aguas, como hemos leído en Proverbios 8. El era desde la eternidad. En el principio era el Verbo, el Verbo era con Dios y era Dios (Juan 1:1) Cristo es el Logos eterno.

Cuando el Padre creaba lo hacía a través del Hijo, la Sabiduría del Padre. En el Hijo fueron creadas todas las cosas, todo fue creado por medio de Él, como se dice en Colosenses 1. Las manos sabias del Padre que crearon cielo y tierra era el Hijo.

Y ese Hijo, que desde el inicio ya tenía una relación especial con nosotros, fue hecho carne y habitó entre nosotros (Juan 1:14) El cual, siendo en forma de Dios,
no estimó el ser igual a Dios como cosa a qué aferrarse, sino que se despojó a sí mismo, tomando forma de siervo, hecho semejante a los hombres." (Filipenses 2:6-7) El mismo Verbo, el mismo Dios, en su infinita humildad y solo por amor, se hizo hombre como tú, vivió como tú, sufrió lo que sufren los hombres y padeció en la Cruz más que ningún otro hombre, pese a su inocencia, soportando lo que tú debiste sufrir por tus pecados.  Dios cargó en Él el pecado de todos nosotros (Isaías 53:6) Él que no conoció pecado, por nosotros se hizo pecado par que fuésemos hechos justicia de Dios en Él (2 Corintios 5:21) Él te liberó por puro amor de la maldición de la muerte y de la ley.

El Hijo fue enviado para reconciliarte con el Padre mediante su sangre pura en la Cruz y su resurrección gloriosa. Él fue levantado de entre los muertos por el Padre para que ya la muerte no tenga ningún poder sobre ti. Él ha vencido a la muerte en su terreno.

Y ese premio que el Hijo ganó por ti lo recibes por fe. Una fe viva, una confianza total, en que tus pecados han sido totalmente perdonados. Una fe en que el Padre no ve tu suciedad cuando te mira, sino la justicia de Cristo.

De tal modo que, si alguno está en Cristo, nueva criatura es (2 Corintios 5:17)

Tu vieja vida pasó. Has sido hecho una nueva criatura. Si el Padre te creó, el Hijo te ha recreado en un nuevo hombre.

¿Cómo sabes que eres nuevo hombre? ¿cómo estás seguro de que Cristo murió por ti y tus pecados te son perdonados? Aquí entra la tercera persona de la Trinidad, el Espíritu Santo.

En el relato de Génesis vemos al Espíritu Santo moviéndose entre el caos, creando orden. Y cumpliendo lo predicho por Joel, descendió en forma de lenguas de fuego sobre los apóstoles en Pentecostés, tal y como el domingo pasado recordamos. Desde entonces se mueve en medio de nuestro mundo caótico y pecador.

El Espíritu Santo da testimonio a tu espíritu de que eres hijo de Dios (Rom 8:16) Él es quien, enviado por el Hijo procedente del Padre, es que da testimonio dentro de ti que Cristo vive en ti. Él es quien restaura tu libre albedrío caído para que puedas responder afirmativamente al llamado de Dios. Es el Espíritu el que habla de las cosas del Padre. Es quien te capacita para toda nueva obra que el Padre preparó de antemano para que anduvieras en ellas.

Es el Espíritu el que te ha convencido de tu pecado, de la justicia de Cristo y del triunfante juicio donde resucitarás para gloria eterna (Juan 16:8)

Es el Espíritu el que produce en ti el amor incondicional para con Dios y para con tu prójimo. Es el que refrena tu lengua mala y el que te obra a ser amoroso con tu vecino. En el Espíritu andas cuando amas a tu vecino. En ti reside como en hermoso templo, el Santo Espíritu, el dador de vida que ya estaba en la creación del mundo.

 

He aquí la hermosa Trinidad, un solo Dios, en tres personas. El Padre te creó del polvo, el Hijo te redime con su sangre y el Espíritu te aviva con su fuego. La salvación, tu salvación, procede de nuestro amado Dios Trino. La redención completa no se puede entender sin la Trinidad.

 

Que la gracia del Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios, y la comunión del Espíritu Santo sean con todos vosotros.
