1º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA

1st SUNDAY OF LENT (CYCLE C)

Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil (Luke 4:1).

Today, the first Sunday of Lent, is an important day for us, the Church. Lent is the liturgical period that prepares us for Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion of our beloved Savior, Jesus. During this time, the Church calls you to recognize your faults and sins, to realize that you are dust and to dust you will return if you do not surrender your life to Christ. It teaches you that “there is none righteous, no, not one” (Rom 3:10), that you were conceived in iniquity (Psalm 51:5), and that if you say you have no sin, you deceive yourself, and the truth is not in you (1 John 1:8). No one who is not holy and blameless can see God, and no one can make themselves holy by their own efforts. In Lent, as you see your own sins, it teaches you that you are weak.

In the face of that weakness, Satan appears. Satan is wise and cunning, he knows your soul and your weaknesses. He knows exactly where to strike. He offers you an easy and pleasant answer to a dilemma. He encourages you to enter through the wide door that leads to destruction.

Perhaps your fault is spiritual indifference, living your life without prayer, without repentance, as if God were a friend to visit on Sundays at church and then forget about Him. Satan whispers in your ear: before praying or reading and meditating on the Scriptures, go watch a soccer game or take a walk on the beach. God will understand. I tell you that God despises spiritual lukewarmness: “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16).

Perhaps Satan encourages you to speak ill of your neighbor, thinking you are superior to him, holier, more righteous, or more honorable. “I don’t forgive or forget those who wrong me,” you say proudly. You increase the hatred in your heart against your brother. The Lord tells you: “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned” (James 5:9). God warns: “But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:15).

Perhaps Satan provokes you by encouraging you to spend all your money on yourself, thinking you deserve luxury and pleasure because you have worked hard, forgetting the material needs of others. You live without thinking about tomorrow, thinking that God will never forsake you. You tempt God by wronging your brother and being sure that God will sustain you. Does the Spirit of God truly dwell in someone who places their treasure in their riches? “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other” (Matthew 6:24).

Satan works especially hard during Lent. During this time when Christians become aware of their weaknesses through fasting and prayer, temptations multiply. The devil knows this.
Thus, he took advantage of the fact that Jesus, the Son of God, guided by the Holy Spirit, had gone into the desert to approach Him and try to tempt Him. He had already triumphed over Adam when he deceived him into disobeying God. As a consequence of this fatal deception, sin entered the world. If he could now triumph over Jesus, the new Adam, the perfect man and perfect God, he would win the battle. But God, our merciful Father, did not want us, humanity, His most sublime creation, to perish. God had other plans, and Satan had already been defeated.

Satan tempts Jesus in three ways:

• He promises a quick way to end His hunger by turning stones into bread. Jesus, as a man, needed to eat after 40 days of fasting. Did Jesus fall into the temptation of satisfying His primary need of hunger? No. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
  Would you rather spend time in leisure than reading the Word of God? Jesus tells you: do not fall into this temptation. Feed spiritually on the Word of God, and your Father who knows your material needs will send the bread your body needs. God watches over those who fear Him and does not forsake His people. That is why He sent manna to the hungry Israel, and that is why He sent His Son, the bread of life, so that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood will not perish, but will have eternal life. The Son has descended from heaven and is present spiritually among us through His Word and in the Eucharist. Take and eat your salvation with faith.
• Satan promises power over all the kingdoms of the earth. He only asks that Jesus worship him. Satan is the prince of sin. He reigns in your heart whenever you murmur against your brother, insult him, or hold a grudge against him. You worship sin when you let your life be guided by bad inclinations. “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Matthew 4:10), Jesus responds. Christ is the Lord. He has been given authority over heaven and earth and is already reigning here, among those who love and serve Him. He only wants you to confess with your mouth that He is your Savior. He only wants you to open your heart to Him, so He can enter and reign in it. “Then he said, 'Lord, I believe!' And he worshiped Him” (John 9:38), cried one of the blind men healed by Jesus.
• Finally, he takes Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem and dares Him to throw Himself down to be saved by angels, as the Psalm 91 that we read earlier says. Satan knows the Scriptures. He knows that Jesus is the Son of David whose kingdom will be eternal, as the prophets spoke. He knows that the Father has sent angels to serve Him. Christ is the seed of the woman who will crush the head of the serpent (Gen 3:15). He will trample the asp (Psalm 91). He crushed Satan, represented by this serpent, when He rose gloriously on the third day. He defeated the prince of death and sin. Satan knew that the Jesus he was tempting was the promised Messiah who would end his reign of death and sin. Did Jesus submit to his game? No. He would defeat him later on the Cross and in the empty tomb. He followed the plan laid out by His Father, He did not tempt Him but obeyed Him. He fulfilled His Father’s will: “Not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39), He said at the foot of Gethsemane. He gave Himself for others. And God glorified Him.
  Place your treasure in Christ who saves you, not in your riches where moth and rust corrupt. Do not tempt God by trusting more in your money than in Christ. Confess with all your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, and you will be saved.

“Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I will trust” (Psalm 91). Trust only in the One who rescued you.

Lord, make us not fall into the temptations that the evil one places in our path. Lord, help us to seek first to be nourished by Your Word daily, through the reading of the Scriptures and the Holy Communion. Lord, let Your love reign in our hearts and not sin, removing any murmuring or pride from us. Lord, help us to trust only in You, who sent Your beloved Son to die on the Cross and raised Him from the dead, so that one day we may follow His path, resurrecting to live eternally, contemplating Your Glory and Majesty.

May the peace of the Lord, which surpasses all understanding, guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

1º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA (CICLO C)

Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán, y fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto por cuarenta días, y era tentado por el diablo (Lucas 4:1)

Hoy, primer Domingo de Cuaresma, es un día importante para nosotros, Iglesia. La Cuaresma es el período litúrgico que sirve de preparatorio para el Viernes Santo, día de la crucifixión de nuestro amado Salvador, Jesús. En este período la Iglesia te llama a que reconozcas tus faltas y tus maldades, a que te des cuenta de que polvo eres y al polvo volverás si no entregas tu vida a Cristo. Te enseña que “no hay ni uno justo” (Rom 3:10), que en maldad fuiste concebido (Salmo 51:5) y que si dices que no tienes pecado, te engañas a ti mismo y no hay verdad en ti (1 Juan 1:8) Nadie que no sea santo e irreprensible podrá ver a Dios y no hay nadie que por sí mismo pueda serlo. En la Cuaresma al ver nuestros propios pecados, te enseña que eres débil.

Ante esa debilidad, aparece Satanás. Satanás es sabio y astuto, conoce tu alma y tus debilidades. Sabe exactamente por donde atacar. Él te ofrece una respuesta fácil y placentera ante una disyuntiva. Él te anima a que entres por la puerta ancha que te lleva a la perdición.

Quizás tu falta sea la indiferencia espiritual, viviendo tu vida sin oración, sin arrepentimiento, como si Dios fuera un amigo al que visitar los domingos en la iglesia y luego olvidarte de Él. Satanás susurra a tu oído: antes que orar o leer y meditar sobre las Escrituras, acude a ver un partido de fútbol o sal a caminar por la playa. Dios lo entenderá. Yo te digo que Dios desprecia la tibieza espiritual: “porque no eres ni frio ni caliente, te vomitaré de mi boca” (Apocalipsis 3:15-16).

Quizás Satanás te anime a hablar mal de tu vecino, creyéndote superior a él, más santo, más íntegro o más honrado. Yo no perdono ni olvido al que me hace mal, afirmas con soberbia. Aumentas el odio en tu corazón contra tu hermano. El Señor te dice: “No os quejéis unos contra otros, para que no seáis condenados” (Santiago 5:9). Dios advierte: “mas si no perdonáis a los hombres sus ofensas, tampoco vuestro Padre os perdonará vuestras ofensas“(Mateo 6:15)

Quizás Satanás te provoque animando a que gastes todo tu dinero en ti, que te mereces tener lujos y placeres porque has trabajado mucho, olvidando, así, las necesidades materiales de los demás. Vives sin pensar en el mañana, pensando que Dios nunca te desamparará. Tientas a Dios, obrando mal con tu hermano, y teniendo por seguro que Dios te sustentará. ¿Verdaderamente mora el Espíritu de Dios en aquel que pone su tesoro en sus riquezas? Nadie puede servir a dos señores, no podéis servir a Dios y a las riquezas (Mateo 6:24)

Satanás trabaja tentando especialmente en Cuaresma. En este tiempo donde los cristianos se hacen conscientes de sus debilidades, mediante el ayuno y la oración, las tentaciones se multiplican más. El diablo lo sabe.

Por ello aprovechó que Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, guiado por el Espíritu Santo, se había retirado al desierto, para aproximarse a Él e intentar tentarle. Ya había conseguido triunfar con Adán, cuando, engañándolo, logró que desobedeciera a Dios. Como consecuencia de este fatal engaño, el pecado entró en el mundo. Si lograba ahora triunfar sobre Jesús, el nuevo Adán, perfecto hombre y perfecto Dios, habría vencido la batalla. Mas Dios, nuestro Padre misericordioso, no quería que nosotros, los hombres, su creación más sublime, pereciéramos. Dios tenía otros planes y Satán ya había sido derrotado.

Satanás tienta a Jesús de tres maneras:

-        Le promete una rápida salida a su hambre, convirtiendo en pan las piedras. Jesús, como hombre, tenía necesidad de alimentarse, tras 40 días de ayuno. ¿Cayó Jesús en la tentación de la necesidad primaria del hambre? No. No solo del pan vive el hombre, sino de toda Palabra de Dios. ¿Prefieres un rato de ocio a leer la Palabra de Dios? Jesús te dice: no caigas en esta tentación, aliméntate espiritualmente de la Palabra de Dios y tu Padre que conoce tus necesidades materiales, te enviará el pan que tu cuerpo necesita. Dios vela por los que le temen y no desampara a su pueblo. Por ello envió el maná al hambriento Israel y por ello envió a su Hijo, pan de vida, para que todo aquel que comiera su carne y bebiera su sangre no pereciera, mas tuviera vida eterna. El Hijo ha descendido del cielo y está presente espiritualmente entre nosotros por medio de su Palabra y en la Eucaristía. Toma y come con fe tu salvación.

-        Satanás le promete poder sobre todos los reinos de la tierra. Solo le ponía como condición adorarlo. Satanás es el príncipe de los pecados. Él reina en tu corazón cada vez que murmuras contra tu hermano, le insultas o guardas rencor contra él. Adoras al pecado en cuanto dejas que tu vida se guíe por las malas inclinaciones. “Al Señor tu Dios adorarás y a Él solo servirás”, le responde Jesús. Cristo es el Señor. A Él se le ha dado potestad sobre el cielo y sobre la tierra y ya está reinando aquí, en medio de los que lo aman y lo sirven.  Solo quiere que confieses con tu boca que Él es tu Salvador. Solo quiere que abras tu corazón para entrar en él y reinar en él. “Entonces él dijo: ¡Creo, Señor! Y lo adoró” (Juan 9:38), gritaba uno de los ciegos sanados por Jesús.

-        Finalmente, lo lleva al pináculo del templo de Jerusalén y le desafía a lanzarse desde allí para que sus ángeles lo guarden, tal y como indica el Salmo 91 que anteriormente leímos. Satanás conoce las Escrituras. Sabe que Jesús es el Hijo de David cuyo reino será eterno del que hablaron los profetas. Él sabe que el Padre ha mandado los ángeles sobre él para que lo sirvan. Cristo es la simiente de mujer que pisará la cabeza de la serpiente (Gen 3:15). Él pisará sobre el áspid (Salmo 91). Él aplastó a Satanás, representado por esta serpiente, cuando resucitó glorificado al tercer día. Él venció al príncipe de la muerte y el pecado. Satanás sabía que ese Jesús al que estaba tentando era el Mesías prometido que acabaría con su reinado de muerte y de pecado. ¿Se sometió Jesús a su juego? No. Él lo vencería más adelante en la Cruz y en el sepulcro vacío. Él siguió el plan trazado por su Padre, no lo tentó, sino que lo obedeció. Él cumplió la voluntad de su Padre: “que no sea como yo quiero, sino como tú quieres” (Mateo 26:39), dijo a los pies del Getsemaní. Él se dio por los demás. Y Dios lo glorificó. Pon tu tesoro en Cristo que te salva y no en tus riquezas donde la polilla y el hollín corrompen. No tientes a Dios confiando más en tu dinero que en Cristo. Confiesa con todo tu corazón que Dios levantó a Jesús de entre los muertos y serás salvo.

“Señor, tú eres esperanza mía y castillo mío, mi Dios, en quien confiaré” (Salmo 91).  Confía solo en aquel que te rescató.

Señor, haz que no caigamos en las tentaciones que el Maligno pone en nuestro camino. Haz, Señor, que busquemos primero alimentarnos con tu Palabra diariamente, mediante la lectura de las Escrituras y la Santa Cena. Haz Señor, que reine en nuestro corazón tu amor y no el pecado, apartando de nosotros cualquier murmuración o soberbia. Haz, Señor, que confiemos solo en ti, que enviaste a tu Hijo amado a morir en la Cruz y que lo levantaste de entre los muertos, para que algún día, nosotros podamos seguir su camino, resucitando para vivir eternamente, contemplando tu Gloria y Majestad.

 

Que la paz del Señor que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guarde vuestros corazones y pensamientos en Cristo Jesús. Amén.
